A gold medal for 'National Collections Everywhere and for Everyone' at RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival

10th July, 2024

Plant Heritage showcased National Plant Collections Everywhere and for Everyone, asking people 'What is your Plant Passion?' at RHS Hampton Court Garden Festival. The team were delighted to be awarded an RHS Gold Medal.

Our display featured a colourful border of mixed planting full of plant groups protected in National Plant Collections across the country, from trees to roses to more drought tolerant plants such as Eryngium, Echinops and Santolina. An eclectic houseplant section further portrayed the breadth of plant groups in National Plant Collections, including plants from Tradescantia to Aeonium to Streptocarpus. This led onto a second colourful and pollinator friendly border including some the 15 Missing Collections we are focussing on in 2024, including Coreopsis, Oregano and Ligularia. From this campaign at the show a new National Collection is already underway!

Alongside the Plant Heritage display were displays from National Plant Collections. Daniel Myhill's display of Rosa persica won a Gold medal and the best display in the Plant Heritage zone, Rubus from Barry Clarke was awarded a Silver Gilt, Hosta (miniature and small) from Hogarth Hostas was awarded a Gold medal and Pinus from Sir Harold Hillier Gardens a Silver medal.

On Daniel Myhill's display of Rosa persica a new Rosa persica 'SEE YOU in Rose' was launched.

As always, Plant Heritage’s popular seed shop (volunteer run) was full of popular and unusual seeds, encouraging people to grow something new in their gardens.

Our fascinating Threatened Plant Competition for 2024 showcased in depth stories of shortlisted plants. The judges' winner was Aubrieta 'Shangary' and the public choice winner was Rhododendron 'Leonardslee Primrose'.

Our 'name this hosta' competition, with a large leaved hosta from Sienna Hosta involved many fun conversations of how a plant is named. The winning name, chosen by Sienna Hosta, was aptly named Hosta 'Hampton Storm'. Look out for it in future years.

Launch of a new persica rose hybrid at RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival

A brand-new persica rose is launched at the world-renowned flower show by National Plant Collection Holder Daniel Myhill, a first-time exhibitor whose display will be in the Plant Heritage zone. The beautiful new ‘SEE YOU in rosé’ has already won awards, and now thanks to a collaboration between Daniel, Kordes Roses and plant retailer Marshalls Garden, it’s the first persica hybrid release in the UK from the celebrated breeder Kordes Roses. Growing to about 70cm tall and 50cm wide, this pretty-in-pink persica rose has open, semi-double flowers with a deep reddish pink eye, perfect for a range of pollinators. It can be pre-ordered as bare root from Marshalls Garden this autumn, and a donation of £2 from every sale will made to Plant Heritage. Thank you.
