The Mulberry: A Very English Tree?

Mulberry specialist and cultural historian Dr Peter Coles looks at the mulberry tree in British horticultural history.

Introduced by the Romans in the 1st century AD, grown in medieval monastery orchards, used to feed silkworms in the 17th century, fashionable as a landscape/garden tree from the 18th century and adopted as a metaphor for happy childhood from Victorian times until today.

Peter takes us on a journey through the centuries with stop-overs in ancient China, Persia, and medieval Europe, ending up in the royal palaces, fine country mansions and modest suburban gardens of the U.K.

For those attending in person, the event is being held in the library at the University Women's Club in Audley Square, London. An in-person ticket includes a glass of wine or soft drink. The club sits at the end of Tilney Street. The entire square itself is under construction so you won't see a square. The entrance is just to the left of the front of the building.

Closest tube stop is Green Park.
