Talk

Zoom talk Frank Fischer - Growing Salvias in my Garden.

Frank’s passion for Salvias from all around the world is immediately evident on entering the garden.

Frank Fischer has made a beautiful garden next to his nursery in the residential area of Umkirch near Freiburg in Germany. His passion for Salvias from all around the world is immediately evident on entering the garden. He also grows many other perennials, usual and unusual along with chilies and annuals. Frank prefers to work in the old fashioned way, propagating most of his plants from the garden and then sells in his adjacent nursery. He is happy to let some of the many seedlings grow on and add to the overall picture of a beautifully relaxed, tranquil garden. This also creates the perfect habitat for many insects and a place of wellbeing for his lucky visitors. There are several different areas for meeting the needs of the many different Salvias from all around the world. There is a raised area at the end of the garden, which he calls ‘The Hill’, where he manages to keep many of the trickier Salvias happy. It is approximately 1.8m high, 23m long and 4m wide and as it slopes down to the ground it offers so many different growing conditions. Frank will talk a little about how he designed and built this wonderfully diverse eco system and what he grows on it.  Having the plants growing in the perfect positions tends to mean that very little watering is needed once plants are established in the garden. Obviously, Frank grows many other interesting plants in many other areas of the garden, I would love to go back again and learn from someone who seems to find making a wonderful garden look so effortless.
