Private garden visit LARKRISE
By kind permission of David and Jenny Miles
David and Jenny moved to Larkrise in 1987 and since then the garden has been completely transformed, with changes still occurring as the garden evolves. Both are retired professional gardeners, and not only have they designed the garden, but they have also done most of the hard landscaping and created the layout of the beds. Their love of plants, many of which are unusual, and eye for plant combinations is reflected in the development of their mixed borders which contain trees, shrubs, perennials, bulbs and ground-cover plants with the aim of having as much colour as possible throughout the year. Of particular note at this time of year are their two ‘mini meadows’, which should be full of Meadow Buttercup and Ox-eye Daisy with a small colony of Southern Marsh Orchids, and their displays of Alliums, Tulipa sprengeri, Iris laevigata and Dutch ‘Iris’.
Although the garden covers just 1/3 acre, there is much to see and delight the senses including a sunken pond, a rock garden and a very productive vegetable plot.
David and Jenny will give us an introductory talk and then take us around the garden.
Directions
From the Plymouth direction, follow the A386 for 3 miles from the Roborough roundabout, then turn left and follow the signs for Crapstone. From the Tavistock direction, follow the A386 to the Yelverton roundabout, take the 1st exit to Plymouth and then after 100 yards turn right to Crapstone. Approaching Crapstone, just after the cattle grid, pass the war memorial on your right, then follow the road to where it bends to the right as you enter the village (do not take the road that goes straight on). Larkrise is approx. 200 yards on the left next to a lane that leads to the Cricket Club, where we will park.
