Private garden visit AVENUE COTTAGE

By kind permission of Richard Pitts and David Sykes.

It is over 30 years since Plant Heritage (at the time the NCCPG) visited the garden at Avenue Cottage in May. With a large collection of scented Azaleas and spring flowering Rhododendrons, this should be a good time to visit. The 10 acres or so have been mostly cleared of the Laurel and Sycamore that grew up after a wartime felling of mature trees in 1944. Since taking on the garden in1987 many of the new trees and shrubs have grown well, with some being unusual. From the network of grass paths that have been created, it is possible to enjoy views of the River Dart and Sharpham House.

Directions

From Totnes take the A381 towards Kingsbridge. After 1 mile, turn left for Ashprington. At the war memorial opposite the Durant Arms turn left uphill past the church. Avenue Cottage is ¼ mile on the right just after the ‘Welcome Sharpham Estate’ sign.
