Leucadendron argenteum
Description:
Endemic to the South African Cape Peninsula above Kirstenbosch, the remaining wild populations are at risk of extinction. The silvery sheen of the leaves comes from many fine hairs, being more intense during hot, dry weather, when the hairs lie flat to protect the leaves from drying out. In wet weather the hairs are erect to allow for free air circulation. Leucadendrons are dioecious with the male (yellow-green) and female (greenish silver) flowers borne on different plants. Tolerant to 5°C.
